Working with Words

A Multisensory Approach

Visual Learning spelling program

Visual

Reading and writing words, SEEING sound and syllable patterns, and doing the lesson activities presents students with the structure of spelling patterns.

Auditory learning spelling program

Auditory

Saying words out loud and tapping sounds allows students to HEAR phonemes (units of sound) in order to internalize spelling patterns.

kinesthetic spelling program

Kinesthetic

Building words, sorting word cards, tapping sounds, and clapping syllables provides a HANDS-ON approach for students to internalize spelling patterns.

The PURE LEARNING approach for working with words:

Daily Lessons ✔︎

Each lesson provides daily practice to be used throughout the week once the spelling patterns have been introduced on Day 1. Days 2-5 consist of independent work for the student.

Comprehensive Program ✔︎

This is more than just a spelling program. Students who use this program will be reading, writing, editing and comprehending - all while internalizing patterns that they can apply over and over again as they make choices for how to spell words.

Manipulatives ✔︎

As a part of the kinesthetic approach, each lesson comes with word cards that can be sorted into specific phoneme and spelling patterns.

Sensory ✔︎

Using the three learning modalities (visual, auditory, kinesthetic), Working with Words helps students of all abilities learn through their senses.

Six Syllables Types ✔︎

Students see the connections between patterns of letters and sounds (phonemic awareness) by focusing on syllable types. Learning to recognize syllable types will lead to making connections to spelling multisyllabic words with the same patterns.
